The Do’s and Don’ts of Dating

In the dating world it can be difficult to know what is okay and what isn’t. You can meet some amazing people, but sometimes a great date can go south fast because one person might be naive to some of the major do’s and don’ts of dating. So here is a quick guideline of some of the things I’ve learned from my dating experience.

  1. Do be positive, even when it’s difficult.

Okay, we’ve all been there. You are excited for your Friday night date and then all the sudden you find out your going to a sci-fi movie that you hate. What do you do? Do you tell your date you hate the movie? When it comes to dating it is important to understand to ALWAYS keep a good attitude and stay positive. It could be the worst date ever, but I can guarantee that if you keep a positive attitude you will help your date out and it will make the experience less painful.

  1. Don’t talk about yourself the whole time.

This might seem like an obvious piece of advice, but this is a legit issue. I can’t tell you how many dates I’ve been on where a guy just constantly goes on about themselves and I am sure girls do it too. The purpose of dating is to try to get to know the other person and when all you do is talk about yourself it makes you look self-absorbed. It’s great to have discussions and share things about yourself just make sure you reciprocate, so your date can share their experiences too.

  1. Do be aware of your surroundings.

This is just a safety precaution, but you should always know where you are and what you are planning on doing when on a date. It is important to know your surroundings when dating, so you can be aware of any precautions you may need to take. I once met up with a guy for a date in a completely different city and I had no idea where I was. Towards the end of the date I couldn’t find where I parked my car and I spent half the night wandering the streets of a foreign city just looking for my car. Bad idea!

  1. Don’t overthink everything.

This is the probably one of the hardest ones for me. Especially all you ladies out there, don’t overthink everything! Guys may be hard to read and they you may be questioning a lot of things while you are dating, but just take a deep breath and realize you can’t control everything and when it comes to dating their will be unknowns. You might not know how interested a guy is in you or what their next move is, or when the guy will pop the question, but you just must take things as they come. Accept that many things are out of your control and you can’t always control what happens, but you can control how you react to it.

  1. Do give people space.

I think it is so important to have a balance between your personal life and your relationship life. Many times, we get caught up in the fun experience of relationships that we forget to take care of ourselves. In any relationship there should be boundaries and your significant other should be able to give you your space. Everyone needs some time to yourself or time with their friends, so make sure you are meeting your personal needs and enjoying life outside of the relationship too.

  1. Don’t play too hard to get.

Everyone likes to flirt and make your date work a little bit for you, but it is important to remember that feelings are involved, and we should all be sensitive to that. You don’t want to lead someone on or make someone put all this effort into a relationship that you don’t really want. You most defiantly don’t want someone to think you are way more committed than you actually are. Never date someone just for entertainment or satisfaction value. Relationships should be about learning and growing together.

  1. Do give them your full attention.

I think the biggest turn off is when people pull out their phone on a date. It shows complete lack of interest in the other person. Some people might not even realize they are doing it, but just be cautious of your mannerism.

  1. Don’t take everything too seriously.

No matter how awkward the situation is you just have to laugh it off. Most people enjoy a little humor. Laugh lots and don’t forget to have fun, even if its nerve-wracking. I remember one time I went a date with a guy and I was trying to crack jokes and tease him a little bit, but I couldn’t even get him to smile a little bit. He just kept asking me questions the whole time. It felt more like an interview rather than a date.

  1. Do your best to be your most real self.

BE YOU! If you want someone to love you for you then you need to be yourself 100% of the time. Everyone has your quirks and you want someone who loves you even with your flaws. Never sacrifice your identity to please someone else.

  1. Don’t be a Wife/Husband Hunter!

I saved this final piece of advice for last because I think it is one of the most common issues in dating. Almost everyone hopes to find a potential spouse. It’s not a bad thing to have your goal be marriage, but make sure you don’t jump ahead of yourself. Take the time to get to know someone very well before you even bring up the idea of marriage. I get it, we all want to be married, but there are some steps you must take before you get there. Focus on improving yourself and make sure you take the time to date and explore different qualities in people. You must make sure you really, truly know what you want before you start moving your relationship towards marriage. Make sure you are more in love with the person rather than in love with the idea of marriage.
